Choosing the Right Window Material

Colorado's climate — big daily temperature swings, intense high-altitude UV, and a real risk of hail — makes material choice matter more here than in milder climates. Here's how the main options compare.

Compare Your Options

Vinyl, Wood, Fiberglass & Aluminum

Every material has trade-offs. Here's what to expect from each in a Colorado climate.

Vinyl

The most popular choice for good reason: strong energy efficiency, low maintenance (no painting or staining), and generally the most budget-friendly option. Vinyl holds up well against Colorado’s temperature swings, though extreme heat over many years can eventually affect color and rigidity in south-facing installations.

Wood

The classic choice for historic homes and anyone who wants a natural look inside and out. Wood offers excellent insulation, but requires more maintenance — periodic painting or staining to protect against moisture and UV, both of which Colorado has in abundance depending on the season.

Fiberglass

Increasingly popular for a reason: it expands and contracts with temperature at nearly the same rate as glass, which means a tighter, more stable seal over time compared to materials that move more. It handles Colorado’s temperature swings well and takes paint if you want a custom color, though it typically costs more than vinyl.

Aluminum

Strong and slim-profiled, making it a common choice for large picture windows, storefronts, and curtain wall systems where a thinner frame matters more than insulation value. On its own, aluminum conducts heat and cold more than the other options, so most residential aluminum windows use a thermal break to improve efficiency — worth confirming if energy performance is a priority.
