Window replacement is a significant investment, and Colorado’s active storm-damage market unfortunately attracts some contractors who aren’t built for the long haul. Here’s what to look for, and what to watch out for.
What to look for
- Local presence. A contractor with a real local address and history is easier to hold accountable than a crew that showed up after a storm and disappears once the season ends.
- Insurance. Confirm it, and don’t just take their word for it: ask for documentation.
- Manufacturer partnerships. Established relationships with recognized window manufacturers (Pella and similar) usually indicate a track record, since manufacturers vet their dealer network.
- Clear, itemized quotes. A trustworthy contractor explains what you’re paying for, not just a bottom-line number.
- Willingness to explain repair vs. replace. A contractor who always recommends full replacement regardless of the actual issue is optimizing for their invoice, not your situation.
- Real reviews you can verify. Check Google and Facebook reviews directly, not just testimonials on the company’s own site.
Red flags to avoid
- Door-to-door storm chasers who appear right after a hailstorm with high-pressure, same-day-signature offers.
- Requests for full payment upfront, before any work has started.
- Vague or verbal-only quotes with nothing in writing.
- Pressure to file an insurance claim regardless of actual damage — a legitimate contractor assesses first and tells you honestly whether you have a claim.
- No local address or a P.O. box only.
Why this matters more in Colorado specifically
The state’s frequent hail events create real demand for storm-chasing contractors who follow severe weather from state to state, do rushed work, and are gone before problems surface. A locally based, veteran-owned company with an actual office and years of local reviews is a meaningfully different bet than a crew you found on a storm-season flyer.
