What to Do After Hail Damages Your Windows

Craftsman-style home exterior with large windows at sunset

Colorado’s Front Range sees more large-hail events than almost anywhere else in the country, and windows are often the first thing to go. If a storm just hit your home or business, here’s how to handle it.

1. Document the damage immediately

Take photos and video of every affected window, from both inside and outside, before you do any cleanup. Include wide shots showing the location on the house or building, and close-ups of cracks, chips, or frame damage. Time-stamped photos taken right after the storm carry more weight with insurers than photos taken days later.

2. Board up or tarp exposed openings

If glass is broken and the opening is exposed to weather, cover it to prevent further interior damage — water intrusion is often more costly than the original glass damage. Most insurance policies expect “reasonable steps to prevent further damage,” so this step matters for your claim, not just your comfort.

3. Contact your insurance company

File your claim as soon as possible. Colorado insurers see a spike in hail claims after major storms, so filing early can mean a faster adjuster visit and repair timeline.

4. Get a professional damage assessment

An adjuster will evaluate the damage, but it helps to have a contractor’s assessment as well — we can document damage that’s easy to miss without trade-specific knowledge (compromised seals that aren’t visibly cracked, for example, which lead to fogging months later).

5. Work with a contractor who handles the insurance side

This is where KV Windows can take the burden off you directly. We document damage, communicate with your insurance company, and work through the claims and repair process together, so you’re not translating adjuster language and repair estimates on your own while also dealing with a damaged home.

Don’t wait on damage that looks minor

A hairline crack or a compromised seal that isn’t leaking yet often is a matter of time, not “if.” Addressing it under an active claim is usually far less costly than waiting until it fails outright.
